Birth & Postpartum Doula

“The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new.” -Osho

My beliefs as a doula:

Every birth should be facilitated according to the mother’s wishes.

Birth is dynamic and involves both the mother and the baby working together.  Movement in birth is very instinctive, and the movements are different for each woman and baby.

The sacred journey through pregnancy, birth and postpartum will lead you to a place of profound transformation, even if it’s not your first time, you will continue to evolve and grow.

This experience is a rite of passage that deserves honor and celebration.

Description of Doula Services

Birth Doula

Supporting your goals and protecting the energy in your birth space are my top priorities. Witnessing you step into your birthing power is what I look forward to most. While I strongly believe that birth should be left to unfold as naturally as possible with as few interventions as possible, I also understand that interventions are sometimes medically necessary, and I also respect each individual’s choices and beliefs. My hope for you is that you leave your birth experience feeling physically safe and emotionally well so that you can confidently step into motherhood.

As your birth doula, some of the ways I can support you are:

  • Provide evidence based information and offer feminine wisdom to guide you through your pregnancy.

  • Validate your feelings and encourage you to trust your intuition.

  • Help your partner understand the birth process and the importance of their active role.

  • Recommend ways to prepare for childbirth, postpartum recovery and breastfeeding.

  • Discuss your options, your rights, and create a plan for birth.

  • Advocate for you by reminding you of your goals, ensuring your voice is heard, facilitating clear communication, etc.

  • Continuous labor support for home births as well as those in a hospital/birth center.

  • Assist with comfort measures.

  • Capture photos and videos of labor and birth, if desired.

  • Oversee the first latch to ensure breastfeeding is off to a good start. Get you connected with additional support (IBCLC) if needed.

Birth Doula care typically includes: 3 prenatal visits, continuous support during labor and the immediate postpartum, and 1 postpartum visit. You will also be able to call/text/email me with any questions along the way.

Postpartum Doula

My role as a postpartum doula is heavily focused on nurturing the mother. I primarily work with the mother on her physical and emotional well-being so that she can rest, heal and spend time bonding with her newborn baby. I will be there by her side to listen as she processes her experience, offering guidance, validation and emotional support.

As your postpartum doula, some of the ways I can support you are:

  • Meet prenatally to create a plan for postpartum healing and breastfeeding.

  • Hold space for your emotions and assist with processing your birth story.

  • Prepare warm beverages and nourishing foods in your kitchen.

  • Breastfeeding support (suggestions on latching and positioning).

  • Tuck you in to bed and make sure all of your essentials are within reach.

  • Provide information on infant care and techniques.

  • Promote physical healing and replenishment: ensure proper nourishment, encourage rest and hygiene, prepare sitz bath, prepare herbal foot soak, foot or shoulder massage, recommend gentle movement and breathing.

  • Light house cleaning: sweeping, vacuuming, dishes, dusting, general tidying, making beds, fold laundry.

  • Help family members process this life-changing transition (partners, children, etc.)

  • Offer guidance with baby-wearing techniques, cloth diapering and elimination communication (EC).

  • Capture pictures of you with your newborn.

  • Connect you to other local professionals such as lactation consultants, chiropractors, craniosacral therapists, pelvic floor physical therapists, massage therapists, mental health therapists, etc.

Postpartum Doula care typically includes: 1 prenatal visit, virtual planning sessions, 4 daytime postpartum visits.

Combined Birth + Postpartum Doula

This includes everything listed above from both the birth and postpartum categories to ensure you are supported through all phases of this rite of passage. A complete rite of passage includes three phases: separation (the pregnancy that prepares you to move away from your previous state of womanhood), liminality (the birth itself which is seen as a time of in-between, a transition or initiation), and incorporation (the postpartum time where you return to yourself, in a new role as a mother).
